Workshops and Take Away Animation

and Storymaking Courses

NEW!

Animation and Trauma; Participatory Stop-Frame Animation in Clinical and Community Settings;

A Series of Online Workshops.

It is with excitement (and some terror) that I launch the ‘Animation and Trauma’ workshop series, ‘Participatory Animation in Clinical and Community Settings’.
Excitement because this represents work I have been innovating, developing and honing for the last 12 years in mental health settings, in secure units and prisons as well with people displaced and seeking asylum.

Terror, because in marketing these workshops I am putting myself out there and the shame parts of me, the ‘fear of failure’ parts get a little bit twitchy.
This though is what the work is about, bringing and transforming our fears, inadequacies and shame into an alchemical story-making process.

This series of online workshops offer an exciting opportunity to go deeper into this  unique and powerful practice of using stop-frame animation as a way of working with and engaging with people (often) with traumatic experiences.

The workshops will be experiential, theoretical, practical and trauma-informed. They will involve group work, discussion, collaboration but also working on your own in your own space. Though we will be working with serious and difficult issues the workshops will also be playful, experimental and fun!

Though part of a series, the workshops will be stand-alone. They will be suitable for arts therapists, participatory and collaborative artists, health professionals, therapists and educators.

You will need a basic understanding of stop-frame animation before you start the workshop. However the workshop includes some video tutorials which you will have access to as soon as you sign up. You could also book a 1:1 session with me for an hour or two if you want to familiarise yourself with the software beforehand or sign up for a take away course.

Tony Gammidge of Animated Tales has been running animation projects in a number of different and challenging settings including prisons, refugee camps, secure units, mental health settings and youth offender institutions for the last 12 years and so has built up some unique experiences that inform these workshops.

1.Animated Memoirs and Embodied Narratives
Sat. 22nd January 2021

Screen Shot 2021-09-07 at 17.50_edited.png

This one day workshop starts with the premise that to work with other people's stories it is important to also work with your own.

It will explore the idea and practice of working with personal stories safely and the concept of embodied narrative, i.e. telling a story through the physical means of making (story-making). We will also think about ideas of emergent narrative (the story emerging from the process), and directorial control (regaining control of your story).

2. Angermation; Animating Revenge, Violence and Trauma
Sat. March 19th 2022

Animation is a safe and powerful medium in which to explore feelings and fantasies of rage, violence and revenge for participants (and ourselves). In this workshop we will be digging deeper. What is it like to animate scenes of revenge and violence and how to keep it safe? What is like to animate a traumatic event? How do we not trigger a re-traumatisation?

3. Animating the Inner Critic and Other
Child Parts
(dtbc) 2022

IMG_5348.jpg

I have noticed participants will often form a relationship with the puppets they make of their child selves and will sometimes even display empathy and compassion towards these parts.

Trauma theories such as 'Internal Family Systems' and Janina Fisher's model 'Trauma-Informed Stabilisation Treatment' has recognised the importance of empathy and compassion towards these 'child parts' (particularly the ones that are difficult and destructive).
We will look at how animation is a practical and powerful way to externalise, make sense of and animate these parts.

"My friends have noticed how much happier I am after days spent making animations on Tony’s course. I’ve entered a magical world, full of light and dark."(Animated Tales Participant)

ANIMATED TALES

FEEDBACK FROM COURSE PARTICIPANTS

"I wake up in the morning thinking about animations - this course has got me hooked on the tiny world."

"This course expanded my awareness, creative output and understanding in three different areas: learning technical tools, overcoming my own blocks to creativity, and exploring my story. Animation techniques were introduced in simple, low tech steps, offering me a manageable way into a vast world of possibilities. Tony’s encouragement was gentle and practical. Under his guidance, I have produced work that has surprised and delighted me. Following the course has also allowed new insights to emerge from playing with my own story from a new perspective."

"It’s a brilliant course delivered in manageable subject modules with exactly the right proportions of practical guidance, thoughtful examples, encouragement to play, try things out and learn from what happens, technical help, and really helpful materials lists of what and where to buy what you might need. I don’t want it to end."

"Using the skills and methods Tony taught, I have gone on to use them with a friend in a care setting. With Tony as mentor and guide, we are working on a project that has already achieved significant benefits for both me and my co-creator; and is very moving to be a part of."

"With each film I make I learn new things, apply my own eclectic skill set in new ways and I learn how this magical world works and the potential it carries. The course is exceptional, Tony is a gifted and conscientious facilitator."

"The course has been fantastic, and if it wasn’t for the online format, I don’t think I would have found the time to do it inbetween work and study.  It has allowed me to work at my own pace and focus on my own areas of development without feeling excessively constrained by formulaic modules.  I have really appreciated that freedom of expression whilst still having a guiding hand to keep me on track!  It has been really exciting to see my story develop and come to life as I have learnt new skills and techniques."

"I think this modality will now become part of my ‘toolkit’ in both my own creative practice and in the work I do in a forensic settings with adolescents."

"A Brilliant, Creative, Experimental, Educational Fun Course"

"As an Art Therapist I find that the Animation skills I have learnt on the courses have enabled me to help develop clients interest in the field of Animation. I have a client at present who is designing some brilliant characters for his own Animation."
